The GM Meetings break up today. The Red Sox are hoping to have the Jason Varitek situation resolved. But as of right now — according to Theo Epstein — there is no decision.
Varitek is supposedly at a deadline to decide whether to exercise his $3 million option for 2010 or become a free agent.
More on this as it becomes available.
UPDATE, 10:50 a.m.: Varitek has until midnight tonight to arrive at a decision. With all due respect to Jason’s landmark career with the Red Sox, this is a whole lot of drama for a player who is now the backup catcher.
Scott Boras could try and negotiate a better deal for his client before the deadline is reached. But it does seem like the Red Sox are prepared to move on if Varitek balks.
UPDATE, 11:40 a.m.: I just saw Scott Boras in the hotel lobby and he said there’s still no decision.
“I’m supposed to talk to to Jason this afternoon,” Boras said.
