New Braves closer Billy Wagner has a new set-up man. It’s former Sox teammate Takashi Saito. He agreed today on a one-year deal worth $3 million.
Given the season-to-season inconsistency of relievers, Saito should be fairly easy to replace and is not a great loss.
In other tangential Sox news, the Phillies signed Placido Polanco to play third base. One theory out there was that moving Dustin Pedroia to shortstop would allow the Sox to sign somebody like Polanco to play second. So much for that. Orlando Hudson? Ronnie Belliard?
The Pedroia switch sounds like a last resort.
Finally, the Seattle Mariners have joined the pursuit of Jason Bay according to the Seattle Times. Bay is from British Columbia and lives in the Seattle area. So obviously the Mariners would be a significant competitor for the Sox.
Meanwhile, I’ve been listening to the sports talk station today while unpacking boxes at my new place and have not heard a stitch of baseball talk. All Tiger, all the time. Hopefully that changes come Monday when the Winter Meetings start.
