Epstein would rather not comment

The Red Sox got a little business done tonight. Boof Bonser was signed for $650,000, avoiding arbitration. They also sent Double A reliever Chris Province to Minnesota to complete the Bonser trade.

Province actually has a pulse, making this potentially a good deal for the Twins. The 24-year-old was 2-4 with one save and a 2.60 ERA over 43 appearances. He also pitched in the Arizona Fall League. Province was a fourth-round draft pick in 2007.

As for Jason Bay “moving on” from the Red Sox, Theo Epstein was asked for a comment via e-mail.

“I try not to get sucked into these back and forths. No comment,” he replied.

Ever persistent, I asked him whether the Red Sox were still considering Bay.

“I’ll pass on that, too,” he wrote back a minute later.

Sounds like the Red Sox will have a different left fielder next season, doesn’t it? So much for my prediction that the sides would eventually come to terms. Bay is a good player, but five years and $75 million? It’s debatable whether he is that good.
