The Red Sox will have a scout in Houston today to watch 21-year-old Cuban Aroldis Chapman throw a bullpen session. So will roughly 10 other teams. Agent Randy Hendricks described it last week as a chance for teams to get to know the mysterious lefty.
There is a report out there that the Sox offered Chapman $15.5 million. That is true . . . and is sort of not true. That offer came seven weeks ago and was made to Chapman’s former agent, Edwin Mejia. Now the player is represented by the Hendricks Brothers and they’re starting from scratch.
Beyond that, the Sox have since signed John Lackey and Mike Cameron and are prepared to choke down $9 million to trade Mike Lowell. It remains to be seen how much is left to invest in international prospects.
