Damon signs with Tigers

Johnny Damon agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal with the Tigers this evening. Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports was first with the news.

It’s a curious deal on several fronts. The Tigers presumably traded Curtis Granderson to the Yankees in December to save money. But Granderson will make $2.5 million less than Damon this season. Meanwhile, Damon (and Michelle Damon) seemed more interested in the White Sox and Braves, but they wouldn’t meet his price.

Who the Tigers were bidding against isn’t clear. But once again, Detroit owner Mike Ilitch stepped up to take care of a Scott Boras client.

The Tigers start at series at Fenway Park on July 30. It’ll be interesting to see how Damon is received now that he is no longer in pinstripes.

Of course, that presumes he is not traded back to New York before then.
