Today felt like spring training. It’s 75 degrees in the Fort.
You’ve read and heard what Josh Beckett had to say. Here are a few more notes:
Dustin Pedroia on the supposedly lax offense: “We have great pitching, we have great defense and we have good offensive players. I don’t even know what run prevention is. I’m a baseball player. I don’t know how to read very good; I don’t know how to write very good. We just go play, man. That’s it. We’ll be fine.
“Everyone is going to have good at-bats and put them together in a row to score a lot of runs. We’ll do that. We’ll be better than a lot of people think. The only thing I care about is if we score more runs than them. They need to put a statistic on that. It’s called wins and losses. That’s the only thing I think anybody around here cares about.”
Terry Francona on Johnny Damon: I wish he went to the National League. Good sign for Detroit. (Manager Jim) Leyland will love him immediately. But I’m not sad he’s not in our division.
“You can talk all you want about his decreasing defensive skills but when he comes up to bat it’s not a good feeling. He’s shooting balls all over the ballpark, over the third base dugout and bouncing one in your dugout then he looks over and he waves at you and then he hits a ball in the gap and gets a double. Not sad to see him move on.”
Pedroia on Jose Iglesias: “He’s awesome. I watched him take groundballs the other idea and he’s incredible. I had heard about him and read about him and he’s what everybody said. His hands are really good. He’ll get stronger, too. He’s only 20. He has a strong arm, too. He’s going to be a player. Those are some of the best hands I have ever seen.”
Finally, a few housekeeping items for those of you keeping tabs on such things;
* RHP Robert Manuel cleared waivers and was invited to camp as a non-roster player. The Sox had DFA’d Manuel when they picked up Gaby Hernandez on waivers.
* RHP Jorge Sosa (visa issues) remains a no show.
* You may or may not have seen RHP Edwin Moreno on a list of non-roster invitees. Turns out he was not invited.
* Daisuke Matsuzaka (sore back) will play catch tomorrow. Francona forgot what day it was when he told us yesterday.
Tomorrow is report day for those position players not yet here. They take physicals on Tuesday and the first full-squad workout is Wednesday.
