Extra Bases

A few notes from today’s workout

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A few other notes from today:

* I did not personally see him, but Terry Francona reported that J.D. Drew had arrived at camp. That leaves Marco Scutaro and Mike Lowell as the lone players yet to show up. Today was only report day and players can do that by phone. Tomorrow is when they have physicals and go through the conditioning test.

* Daisuke Matsuzaka said he has no pain in his back and plans to play catch every day to prepare himself for returning to the mound. He made 25 throws from 60 feet today and 25 more from 90. I watched all of them and he was basically using his regular delivery, but not finishing the pitch off like he would where he off the mound.

“I had some hesitation going into it but I was able to throw without any discomfort, so I’m relieved,” Matsuzaka said. “For now we’ll see how I feel tomorrow. As long as I don’t have any unusual soreness, I think probably another week of playing catch and then at that point I need to communicate with the trainers and decide what I will do.”

Matsuzaka said he expected it would take a week of getting his arm back in shape before he got on the mound. He is behind the other starters but not yet to a point where it’s worrisome.

* Adrian Beltre put in a show in batting practice. He drilled five in a row over the fence at one point.

* Mike Cameron spoke to reporters for a while and said he had no concerns with working with Jacoby Ellsbury, saying they would be learn from each other. I can’t guarantee you’ll like Cameron the player (although I think you will), but you’re going to like him as a guy. He is accessible, accountable and he takes time to sign autographs during every homestand. He’s a class act.
