The Texas Rangers received some unexpected bad news today. Infielder Khalil Greene will not be coming to spring training because of social anxiety issues. It is uncertain when — or if — he will join the team this season.
The Rangers saw Greene as their utility infielder. Mike Lowell is not a similar player but can play third base and has said he is willing to learn how to play first. As the Rangers search for Greene’s replacement on their roster, perhaps they will again entertain the idea of trading for Lowell.
Based on their spring-training roster, Texas has Joaquin Arias in camp along with Esteban German. They figure to look at any free agents still out there, too.
Lowell is still recovering from the thumb surgery that canceled out his trade to Texas in December. He is close to swinging a bat and would likely need to demonstrate his health before the Red Sox could restart trade talks with the Rangers or any other team.
Just something to keep an eye on.
