Gonzalez will set the bar high

Take a guess what Adrian Gonzalez wants in his next contract. Oh, only what Mark Teixeira got the from the Yankees. A cool eight years and $180 million.

“You always shoot high and adjust to the marketplace,” agent John Boggs told Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Who knows what might happen?

Well of course we know what will happen. The Padres will trade him so they can get more than a couple of draft picks. It could be in July, it could be over the winter.

Let’s assume for a second that Gonzalez and Boggs are serious. Should the Sox trade primo prospects for a guy who is going to ask for that kind of contract? Gonzalez will be 29 when his current deal is up. It’s hard to imagine Theo Epstein giving him an eight-year deal.

Two words for you: Jayson Werth. Put him in right field, make J.D. Drew a DH for a year and off you go.
