Notes: This will be the first game for Varitek since March 3. He then missed about a week tending to his sick father. … Beckett will pitch up to four innings. … Back with much more later on.

UPDATE, 8:20 p.m.: It’s a cut-down day. Those who have left or are packing include pitchers Casey Kelly, Robert Manuel, Kris Johnson and Adam Mills.

UPDATE, 9:50 a.m.: Other players sent down were Jose Iglesias, Lars Anderson, Kyle Weiland, Che-Hsuan Lin, Luis Exposito, Yamaico Navarro and Ryan Kalish.

The decisions were based largely on playing time. Plus none of those players were being considered for the major league roster.

Iglesias hit .300 with three RBI in 10 at-bats over five games. The 20-year-old from Cuba left a good first impression, but the organization’s plans call for him to spent at least one full season in the minors.

“I think he was probably a little disappointed. He’s a very confident young man,” manager Francona said. “But he needs to go play. That’s important.”

Kelly appeared in one major-league game, throwing two scoreless innings against Baltimore on March 7. He also pitched an inning against Northeastern on March 3 and three innings of an intrasquad game on Saturday.

“It was a tremendous experience,” Kelly said as he packed his bag. “I got a lot out of it. I have a lot I can draw on. I hope I stick around a lot longer next year.”

UPDATE, 10:32 a.m.: It does not appear Daisuke Matsuzaka will throw BP today but he did just play catch. So that’s progress.

UPDATE, 10:45 a.m.: Josh Beckett was scratched because of an illness. Ryne Miller will start in his place.

UPDATE, 10:55 a.m.: Johnny Pesky is here for the first time.
