The Red Sox have a split-squad doubleheader on Sunday and another one on Monday. The timing is poor given the growing injury list.
Jed Lowrie (mono), Gil Velazquez (thumb) and Darnell McDonald (oblique) are out. Jacoby Ellsbury is feeling better after some flu-like symptoms but isn’t going to be pushed quite yet. Mike Lowell is still being worked in slowly as well. He’ll get some at-bats in a minor-league game today.
“We’re running low on everybody,” Francona said.
The manager doesn’t think the Sox need to go out and get a shortstop to compete for the backup spot with Bill Hall. They have Angel Sanchez in camp and he’ll get innings, probably a few more than expected.
A few other notes:
* Jeremy Farrell, John Farrell’s son, is with the Pirates today as an extra player. He’s a infielder.
* Because it’s a makeup game, that split-squad game in Jupiter on Monday against the Cardinals will not feature too many big names. Jeremy Hermida and Michael Bowden might be it.
* Ellsbury will play tomorrow.
* Daisuke Matsuzaka and his wife Tomoyo are new parents. Their daughter was born Thursday night and Dice-K is headed back today to throw a bullpen. The media was not given the baby’s name.
