Extra Bases

Lowell to Rangers again?

The Red Sox traded Mike Lowell (and $9 million) to the Rangers for Max Ramirez during the Winter Meetings. The swap was called off when it turned out Lowell had a torn ligament in his right thumb.

Four months later, could the same deal get done again?

Texas is still looking for a Lowell-type of player and Lowell is still available. He’s playing third base tonight and the Rangers have a scout here at City of Palms Park.

Team scout games all the time, so that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. But it’s worth noting.

There are two potential holdups to a deal:

1. Is Lowell healthy enough? He’s had thumb surgery, his hip will never be right until he gets it replaced and he fouled a ball off his knee the other day. The Rangers will have to make that determination. But Lowell is getting there.

2. How much money will the Sox eat? It was $9 million in December but the Rangers had more money to spend then.

Meanwhile, now we know why Junichi Tazawa hasn’t been throwing too well in camp. He’s in Birmingham, Ala., today to be examined by Dr. James Andrews for an elbow problem.
