FORT MYERS – Terry Francona announced a few roster moves but nothing of any consequence. The Sox optioned infielder Kevin Frandsen and catcher Dusty Brown to Pawtucket and re-assigned catcher Gustavo Molina and third baseman Jorge Jiminez were re-assigned to the minor league camp.
In other news:
Francona indicated all positional players and pitchers have been spoken to meaning there are other roster moves on the way but the Sox need players for future spring training games.
Francona said it was difficult to completely judge Daisuke Matsuzaka’s 62-pitch minor league outing with a makeshift defense, but “he felt good about it.”
Francona said that Boof Bonser got his work in today and will pitch Saturday, meaning Bonser will likely start the season on the disabled list which bodes well for either Scott Atchison or Joe Nelson, while Alan Embree and Scott Schoeneweis battle it out for the second lefty spot in the rotation.
Manny Delcarmen indicated after he threw at the minor league complex that he could be a multiple-inning type middle man given his arm strength and a changeup that allows him to get lefties out. Francona wouldn’t go quite that far as to label him but did say “when he’s pitching well he gives our bullpen a different look.”
Mike Lowell is in the lineup tonight and will also play Wednesday in Sarasota. Given that he started late and has missed some time with a knee contusion, Francona didn’t think it was a big deal because of the backup role Lowell will be in when the team heads north. Lowell has said he doesn’t expect to go on the DL. It appears there’s still interest in Lowell by Texas, who has had a scout watching him for the last few weeks.
