Is money slowing a Lowell deal with the Rangers?

The Texas Rangers have been watching Mike Lowell for a long time and generally they feel Lowell could be an asset to their team. One issue, however, according to a major league source, is the amount of money the Red Sox would have to pay of Lowell’s $12 million deal.

Earlier this winter the Sox were willing to take on $9 million of Lowell’s $12 million contract and get catcher/DH Max Ramirez in return. The feeling is the Rangers want the Red Sox to take on more, but not sure they will. Lowell has begun to swing the bat well and could serve as early protection in case David Ortiz or Adrian Beltre get off to slow starts.

Many baseball scouts have also wondered where the New York Mets are on Lowell. with Daniel Murphy out 2-6 weeks with an injury it would appear Lowell would be a good fit.
