It’s Schoeneweis over Nelson

As expected, LHP Scott Schoeneweis got the nod over RHP Joe Nelson for the final spot in the bullpen. Every indication was such this afternoon and a team source just confirmed it to the Globe.

The choice for Nelson is to either go to Pawtucket or retire. He cannot opt out of his contract until June. Given how often teams change relievers, Nelson will almost surely go to Triple-A.

The Sox have done a nice job of amassing quality bullpen depth. And don’t forget that LHP Dustin Richardson never really got a chance to show much in camp when he pulled a quad. He could get in the mix at some point this season.
