David Ortiz is in the final season of the four-year extension he signed in 2006. The Red Sox hold a $12.5 million option for 2011 that is unlikely to be exercised no matter how well Ortiz plays.
The market for one-dimensional players has changed dramatically since Ortiz agreed to his last deal and any return to the Red Sox would almost certainly have to be on new terms.
But Ortiz thinks he will be back.
“I know what’s going to happen next year,” he said before going 0 for 3 with a walk. “I’ll be playing baseball for the Red Sox next year, watch. It’s just a matter of time.
“Do you think I can still surprise people? I think at this point, nothing will be a surprise. I can’t surprise people in Boston. “I will get people in Boston to agree with me, that I’m not finished.”
