Cameron has kidney stone; OF needed?

Mike Cameron’s lower abdominal pain is apparently a kidney stone according to agent Mike Nicotera. The center fielder will be out until that passes and maybe the day after.

Meanwhile, Jacoby Ellsbury (bruised ribs) is improving but seems unlikely to play tonight. It still hurts when he takes a deep breath and that is not exactly conducive to playing the outfield or swinging a bat.

The Sox have three healthy outfielders — J.D. Drew, Jeremy Hermida and Bill Hall. In theory, Kevin Youkilis could play left field but we saw how badly that turned out last season.

With 13 games in the next 13 days, the Sox may need to add an outfielder to the roster. Josh Reddick and Darnell McDonald are the likely candidates.

Reddick is off to an uninspiring .138/.167/.172 start for Pawtucket after a terrific spring training. But he is on the 40-man roster and McDonald is not, which could be a factor.

As an aside, this situation speaks to the danger of having two designated hitters — David Ortiz and Mike Lowell — on the roster. Lowell can play 3B and a little 1B but the Sox are well stocked at those positions without him. Ortiz is essentially useless in the field.
