Terry Francona is hopeful that Jacoby Ellsbury can play by the middle of next week. The center fielder, who badly bruised his ribs last Sunday, took 25 swings today and reported good improvement.
Ellsbury was asked if the middle next week was possible.
“It’s hard to say. I don’t want to make any predictions. But I would like to hope that’s a reasonable time,” he said. “Today was the best progression. I’m pretty happy with the way today went.”
Had he gone on the disabled list, Ellsbury could have come back no earlier than April 27. So if he can play on Tuesday or Wednesday, the Sox will have made the right decision.
“Every day is going to be a little bit better,” Ellsbury said. “I hope I don’t have any setbacks or anything like that. Today was a step in the right direction.”
