Wrapping it up from soggy Fenway

Tonight’s game was suspended by rain in the middle of the 9th inning with the score 1-1. It will be restarted from that point at 7:10 p.m. on Saturday. The teams will then play the second game of the series 30-45 minutes later.

Weather permitting, of course.

The only tickets honored on Saturday will be for Saturday’s game. Tickets for Friday will not be valid for either the suspended game or the regularly scheduled game. Again, NOT valid.

As for the baseball we did see tonight …

* Josh Beckett was sharp, scattering four hits and striking out eight with one walk. He wasn’t sure how to feel afterward, saying he had never been in this situation. Beckett had a great breaking pitch, which is impressive considering that’s a “feel pitch” and there were terrible conditions.

* Much will be made, certainly, about Tampa Bay’s four stolen bases. One of them led to the unearned run the Rays scored in the third inning. The Sox have allowed 16 stolen bases in 17 attempts. The catchers have to do a better job. Victor Martinez, in particular, has made some sloppy throws.

But the Red Sox do not slide-step or spend much time having their pitchers work on holding runners. They would prefer to give up the base rather than distract the pitcher into throwing a meatball. They’re not the only team with that approach.

* Jason Varitek refused to speak at length to the writers after the game, saying the game wasn’t over. “You’re trying to trick me,” he said.

I thought he was kidding. He was not.

* Evan Longoria (2 for 4) is now 27 of 76 against the Sox since the start of last seaso with eight homers and 27 RBI.

* J.D. Drew is down to .129 and has struck out 14 times in 31 at-bats. David Ortiz, meanwhile, is up to .172 and was upset the game was suspended. “I was ready for a walk-off,” he said.

Catch you tomorrow. Thanks for reading tonight.
