The Red Sox will have Daisuke Matsuzaka throw a four-inning simulated game in Toronto on Monday.
No word yet on when he goes into the rotation. It will likely be May 2 or 3 in Baltimore.
Terry Francona also refused to confirm reports that Tim Wakefield is headed to the bullpen.
So the rotation is this for now:
Friday: Presumably Lackey
Saturday: Matsuzaka or Beckett
Sunday: Beckett or Matsuzaka
UPDATE, 4:49 p.m.: Francona ducked the Wakefield question, saying he wanted to communicate with the pitcher directly. But Wakefield certainly knows the score given that he was only in the rotation in the first place because Matsuzaka was on the disabled list.
Wakefield threw a bullpen today and on his way out of the clubhouse took a circuitous route, seemingly bent on avoiding reporters. Obviously he knows the deal. It’s just a matter of time before a slot comes open anyway.
Meanwhile, Francona said the Sox aren’t sure whether Jacoby Ellsbury will even go on the road trip. So that would seem to indicate he won’t come off the DL on Tuesday when he’s eligible.
Mike Cameron said he felt better and rode an exercise bike. But it’s too early to tell whether his sports hernia is healing up or not.
UPDATE, 6:15 p.m.: Tim Wakefield came into the clubhouse 45 seconds before the media had to leave. I asked him if he would answer a few questions. “Nope,” he said.
So there you go.
