State of the Sox: The Red Sox have won two of their last three but fell 3-0 against Texas last night. The Sox are 2-5 on a homestand that has three games left. They start the day six games out of first.


Battle of the bad: The Red Sox and Orioles are two of the four worst teams in baseball when it comes to run differential so far this season. The Pirates, who have been outscored by 57 runs, lead the list followed by the Orioles at -35. Then come the Astros (-30) and the Sox (-20).

Bullpen bonanza: Red Sox relievers have thrown 19 scoreless innings over the last five games. They have given up six hits, walked 10 and struck out 12.

O no: The Orioles have the worst record in baseball and have lost 12 of their last 13 including three in a row. Going back to last season, the Orioles have lost 27 of their last 35 games.


Men of steal: Opponents have stolen 37 of 38 bases against the Red Sox this season including 35 in a row The one and only time the Sox threw somebody out was Robbie Cano of the Yankees on April 7.

Return of Papi: David Ortiz was benched for two straight games. He is 6 of 41 (.146) with 17 strikeouts and two RBI. He is hitless in his last eight at-bats.

The good: Darnell McDonald is 3 of 7 with three walks, two home runs and four RBI in his first three games. … Ramon Ramirez has not allowed a run in his last four appearances, a span of 6.1 innings. … The team is 8 of 17 with runners in scoring position in the last three games, a huge improvement from the first 14 games of the season.


The bad: Dustin Pedroia has one hit in his last 20 at-bats. … Victor Martinez has grounded into seven double plays, the most in the majors.

Well? We’re waiting: Lester has allowed 21 hits, walked nine and two in 16 innings. In 15 career starts before May 1, he is 2-6 with a 5.46 ERA.
