Terry Francona moved J.D. Drew into the second spot of the lineup and dropped Dustin Pedroia to third. The idea was to get Drew more pitches to hit by slotting him ahead of the team’s hottest hitter.
Drew has shown some improvement, going 3 for 12 in his last three games with two runs scored, five RBI and only one strikeout.
But Pedroia has fallen off the table. He’s 1 of his last 24 with one RBI. A .391 hitter in the second spot, he’s hitting .042 as a No. 3 hitter. He’s 2 for 22 hitting second.
Obviously we’re talking about a small sample size. But Pedroia does seem to be pressing.
Francona would love to have a set lineup. But the loss of Jacoby Ellsbury and the slumps experienced by Drew and David Ortiz have thrown those plans off.
