So why is Fabio Castro here? It was his turn to pitch in Pawtucket, that’s why.
“We needed a fresh arm in the bullpen,” Terry Francona said. “Hopefully we don’t desperately need him. … We needed to cover ourselves. We’re pretty short.”
Francona said he Red Sox would not use Daniel Bard, Hideki Okajima or Jonathan Papelbon tonight. The late-inning trio has all been used a lot lately. The Sox need seven innings out of Clay Buchholz and a bunch of runs tonight.
A few other notes:
* Jacoby Ellsbury took some swings off a tee today as did Mike Cameron for the first time. Both of those guys seem to be making progress.
* Tim Wakefield won’t be used out of the bullpen until Friday, which would have been his turn were he still a starter. The Sox have yet to speak to him about his new role. They want to give him some more time to settle down.
* Francona reiterated that there is nothing physically wrong with Josh Beckett.
