Nomar’s in the house

Nomar addresses the media

The man of the hour has arrived.

Former Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra arrived at Fenway Park at about 3:50 p.m. today. The Sox will honor Nomar during a pregame ceremony tonight.

“It’s a huge, huge honor for me,” Garciaparra said to the assembled media just after 5:00 p.m. today at Fenway Park. “To have a day like this when I get to experience this in front of all the great fans of Boston, I’m eternally grateful to the organization for allowing me to have a day like this. Hopefully they can see what this organization has meant to me and in return they definitely showed me what the years that I played meant to them.”

Nomar was asked if he had a message for the fans. “I don’t know if I can really express or put in to words just how grateful I am,” Garciaparra said. “Last time when I came here with Oakland, and you asked me, ‘What did you miss?’ I just never had a chance to tell them ‘thank you.’ Tell them thank you and that I love them.”

In March, Garciaparra signed a one-day minor league deal with the Red Sox so he could officially retire as a member of the team. Nomar is currently a baseball analyst for ESPN.
