These injury updates for you via Terry Francona:
Josh Beckett: The Red Sox play an interleague series at Philadelphia starting May 21. Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz took batting practice before the game tonight. Beckett had back spasms and stopped.
“He tweaked his back swinging,” Francona said. “We’ll get him checked out in the morning. He had a stiff back the other day a little bit. He was starting to swing the bat and he felt it. It grabbed him a little bit. So we’ll get him checked out tomorrow.”
Is his start on Friday in danger?
“We really don’t know. … We’ve been trying to progress out pitchers slow. Off the tee then some flips, come hitting in the cage. We do it right before the game because the cage is free. He’ll be checked in the morning.”
J.D. Drew: “He’s had bouts with vertigo and he had a pretty good bout going. It looked like he just got off a boat. It looked like me getting off a boat. He tried to get up in the fifth inning and move around. I think he was starting to feel better. Then when he did that he didn’t feel so good. This has happened to him before.”
Jacoby Ellsbury: “He’s doing OK. We’ll keep re-evaluating every day.”
