Some baseball items of peripheral interest to Red Sox fans:
* Tom Glavine, the pride of Billerica, will have his No. 47 retired by the Braves. The lefty is a sure Hall of Famer. He played for the Mets when I covered that team and getting to know him was one of the few highlights of that beat.
Boston.com has a photo gallery of Glavine’s career highlights.
* Speaking of the Mets, they just called up 1B/DH Chris Carter. He was the guy the Red Sox traded last summer for Billy Wagner. That deal ultimately landed the Sox the No. 20 and No. 39 picks of the draft when Wagner signed with the Braves.
* The Philadelphia-at-Toronto series from June 25-27 has been moved to Philadelphia because of concerns associated with the G20 Summit in Toronto. You can read more about it at the Biz of Baseball.
Also, congrats to Jackie MacMullan, who has named recipient of the Curt Gowdy Media Award by the Basketball Hall of Fame in recognition of her “significant contribution to the game of basketball.”
Jackie Mac covered hoops for the Globe for many years before moving to Sports Illustrated and other outlets. She is an excellent writer and this honor is well-deserved.
