Red Sox coverage in today’s Globe

Jonathan Papelbon has become a more diverse pitcher after throwing almost exclusively a fastball at times last season. Amalie Benjamin has the story.

While it’s certainly a good idea for Papelbon to be mixing his pitches, he is averaging only 6.8 strikeouts per nine innings this season. That’s down from 10.0 in 2009, 10.1 in 2008 and 13.0 in 2007. His walk numbers (5.1 per nine) are also up significantly from last season’s 3.2 mark and the 1.0 he had in 2008.

The notebook has the Red Sox embarking on a tough stretch of games. There’s also an update on Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury.

The minor league notebook looks at Eammon Portice making a good change. There are also reports on Pawtucket’s bullpen, Anthony Rizzo, Jose Iglesias, Tim Federowicz and Oscar Tejada
