Cowboy up: Millar joins NESN

During his three seasons with the Red Sox (2003-05), it became clear that affable Kevin Millar would be a natural in the broadcast media once his playing days were complete.

The folks at NESN apparently agreed. The network announced today that Millar announced today that the former Red Sox first baseman will serve as a studio analyst for select games.

Millar will make his NESN debut Thursday, May 27 on the pregame show before the Red Sox host the Kansas City Royals. He will join host Tom Caron and Jim Rice.

“We are thrilled to have Kevin join our team of outstanding studio analysts,” said Joel Feld, NESN’s executive vice president of programming and executive producer, in a press release.

“Kevin is a fan favorite and he brings first-hand knowledge of the game. He has never been shy about sharing his opinions and our fans will enjoy the added dimension he will bring to our Red Sox programming.”

Millar will join Dennis Eckersley, Jim Rice and Peter Gammons in the rotation.

Millar also recently joined MLB Network as a studio analyst, and is contributing to the Fox network’s baseball coverage, including handling studio analyst duties Saturday night when the Red Sox play the Phillies.

Millar signed with the independent St. Paul Saints at the beginning of the month and has played under a contract arrangement that allows him to leave the team to fulfill his broadcasting duties. He has played six games for the Saints this season, with five hits in 24 at-bats.
