Daisuke Matsuzaka has started 31 innings for the Red Sox in his five starts. Here’s what the opposition has done in those innings:
0 runs — 23 times
1 run — 5 times
3 runs — 1 time
5 runs — 1 time
6 runs — 1 time
So while he has a 5.76 ERA, if you take those two terrible innings out of the mix, it’s 2.60.
He’ll face the Royals on Thursday and your guess is as good as mine as to what he will do. But these numbers suggest to me that he has a chance to be pretty good this season. The ability to be a good starter is in there and it’s bound to come out more than one random night in Philadelphia.
