Extra Bases

Wakefield, not Francona, decided he was done

Need to hop on some newspaper work. But wanted to let you guys know that Terry Francona was willing to let Tim Wakefield try and finish off his shutout today. But Wakefield told him he was through for the day.

Wakefield later said it didn’t mean anything to him.

Wakefield is the oldest American League pitcher to throw eight or more scoreless innings since Charlie Hough on July 20, 1992. Pitching for the White Sox, Hough threw eight scoreless innings against the Orioles at the age of 44.

Thanks to Pam Ganley of the Sox for that note.
