Extra Bases

More on the Matsuzaka mystery

This would seem almost impossible. But obviously it’s not.

Opposing hitters are 27 of 124 (.218) against Daisuke Matsuzaka this season. Yet he has a 5.77 ERA through six starts.

Meanwhile, over the last two seasons he has put 162 runners on base (108 hits, 51 walks, 3 hit batters) over only 93.2 innings.

The thing about Matsuzaka is that as a No. 5 starter, he’s acceptable. You just don’t want to pay $103 million for a No. 5 starter. And it would a huge gamble to entrust a playoff game to him at this point given what it could do to the bullpen.

His contract would seem untradeable. Beyond that, what team would want to take on his baggage? The Sox have little choice but to try and make it work.
