Josh Beckett spoke to the writers just a few minutes ago. He was shut down yesterday and it’s the same today for him as he tries to return from a bad back.
“Everybody has to answer to somebody,” he said. “They’re telling me what to do.”
The Sox have told him that he needs to feel 100 percent before he can pick up a ball again. When Beckett threw in the bullpen on Friday, his arm slot was off as he compensated for the back soreness. That sort of thing can lead to a shoulder injury. So the Sox are being ultra cautious
“It’s kind of frustrating. It’s more discomfort than it is pain,” Beckett said.
Beckett said the injury is muscular in nature, which is good news. An MRI showed no structural damage.
Dustin Pedroia, who has a day off, was rattling around the clubhouse like a pinball. He sat at the door for a while, checking credentials as reporters came in. Then he dropped into Terry Francona’s office to play some cribbage.
Giving him today off makes sense. With the team off tomorrow and playing a night game on Tuesday, Pedroia will get roughly 65 hours off since he played on Saturday night.
