There wasn’t much to talk about this afternoon with Terry Francona as the Sox played a day game on Sunday and were off yesterday. But the Celtics were a topic that caught his attention.
Francona has become friendly with Doc Rivers. Their schedules don’t allow them to get together very often. But they exchange phone calls and text messages. The two are part of a small club of team leaders who have succeeded in Boston.
In January, Rivers spoke to the the Sox prospects at the rookie development program. Francona listened in and said he learned a lot from his presentation.
“I’m a big Doc fan,” Francona said. “I like what he stands for and how he treats his players.”
So much so that Francona pulled his car over to the side of the road to send Rivers a congratulatory text message after a recent playoff game. The Celtics were just about to finish the game and Francona wanted to make sure he got his message in.
Francona didn’t have any prediction for The Finals but said he’ll be rooting for the Celtics avidly. He was the type of fan who stayed up late for West Coast games even before he got to know Rivers.
It was fun hearing Francona talk about something else.
