Red Sox have some trade bait

(Note: This is just speculation. I have no knowledge of any trades in the works. Again, this is only speculation.)

General managers will be busy this weekend preparing for the amateur draft, which starts on Monday. But could Theo Epstein mix in a trade or two?

Boof Bonser’s injury rehab assignment ends on Sunday. The big righthander is out of options, so the Sox will either have to add him to the 25-man roster or designate him for assignment.

Mike Lowell, in the meantime, has little use beyond occasionally DH’ing when there’s a tough lefty on the mound and David Ortiz could use a day off.

It’s a reach, but could the Sox get anything for a Lowell/Bonser package?

By “anything” I’m not talking about a major league player necessarily. Maybe just a decent prospect or a Triple-A arm that could come in handy down the road.

Bonser could have some value. His last two starts — 13 innings, 9 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 11 strikeouts — suggest that he is now healthy and ready to return to the majors. Perhaps the Sox will simply see what he can do as opposed to Scott Atchison or Joe Nelson.

With Tim Wakefield in the rotation, the Sox could use a long reliever/spot starter in the bullpen and Bonser could fill that role.

One way or another, there are moves Epstein can make here to tweak the roster a little and make it better.
