A few quick updates for you:
* Daisuke Matsuzaka is not scheduled for an MRI, which Terry Francona acknowledged is a good sign in terms of the forearm soreness that put him on the disabled list yesterday.
* Dustin Pedroia is 8 of his last 17 and said after the game his right knee is feeling better, he’s swinging the bat better and that is translating to results on the field.
* Josh Beckett got through his throwing session fine.
* Team sources confirmed that the first two picks in the draft, Kolbrin Vitek and Bryce Brentz, have agreed to terms and are awaiting only physicals. Both will be sent to Lowell. The team’s third pick, Anthony Ranaudo, has signed up with Brewster in the Cape Cod League and will pitch there to try and improve his value.
The 39th overall pick, Ranaudo and agent Scott Boras hope to convince the Red Sox that he deserves a contract befitting a Top 10 pick, which he would have been had be not been injured. Signing Vitek ($1.4 million) and Brentz ($889,200) to “slot” deals would seem to give the Red Sox some wiggle room.
