The first two players the Red Sox took in the draft — Kolbrin Vitek and Bryce Brentz — were in the lineup for Lowell last night against Vermont on the first day of the New York-Penn League season.
Lowell lost 9-4. Vitek, hitting third as the DH, was 1 for 3 with a walk. Brentz, the right fielder, hit fourth and was 1 for 4 with one RBI.
Brandon Jacobs was 2 for 4. He was a 10th round pick last season who was given $750,000 to turn down a football scholarship to Auburn. He’s a big-time athletic outfielder.
Casey Kelly had a rough night for Double-A Portland. He allowed five earned runs on nine hits and three walks in 3.2 innings and committed an error against Akron. The Sea Dogs won 8-7 in 10 innings, however. Ray Chang had a walk-off single.
