Via the Calgary Herald comes word today that the Red Sox have signed yet another player out of an independent league.
This time it’s righthander Jay Broughton, who played for the Calgary Vipers and is on his way to Lowell.
He is a Golden League refugee, the same place the Red Sox found Daniel Nava and Pawtucket reliever Robert Coello, who has yet to allow a run in 6.2 Triple-A innings and has struck out nine.
The connection? Calgary manager Morgan Burkhart is friendly with Allard Baird, one of Theo Epstein’s assistants. Burkhart played for the Sox in 2000-01 and then with the Royals, which is where he got to know Baird.
Thanks to MLB Trade Rumors, where I saw mention of this move first.
