State of the Sox: The Sox have won three of their last four and 10 of heir last 14. They start the day 1.5 games behind the Yankees in the division.

Woes against the O’s: The Sox are inexplicably 4-5 against the woebegone Orioles. Baltimore is 8-29 on the road this season.

Wake’s up: Tim Wakefield is 15-13, 4.21 in 48 career appearances against the Orioles. Wakefield has pitched well of late, allowing 11 earned runs over his last 28 innings. Opponents gave hit .245 against him in that stretch.

Wakefield has pitched nine innings against the Orioles this season, allowing seven runs on 12 hits.

Hot hitters: David Ortiz is 4 of 10 with two homers, two walks and seven RBIs in the last three games. … Marco Scutaro has hit safely in seven straight at 11 of 33. … Mike Cameron is 9 of 29 with four runs scored and six RBIs in his last nine games.

Cold hitters: Kevin Youkilis is 5 of 30 (.167) in his last eight games with 12 strikeouts. His batting average has dropped from .313 to .297. … Daniel Nava is 3 of his last 21 with one RBI. … J.D. Drew has had only 10 plate appearances in the last 11 games, going 2 for 8 with two walks.

Insane Adrian Beltre Stat of the Day: He has hit safely in 17 of the last 18 games at 28 of 67 (.418) with 11 extra-base hits, 13 RBIs and 16 runs scored. He is at .418/.467/.731 in that stretch.

Bard blasts: Daniel Bard has thrown seven shutout innings in his last eight appearances, allowing three hits without a walk and striking out seven.

Oki not OK: Hideki Okajima’s last four appearances have produced six runs on 10 hits over three innings. Opponents were 10 for 19 against him.

Pitching problems: The Sox are 4-4 in their last eight games. The reason is pretty simple. Their pitching staff has a 5.37 ERA in that stretch. Take Jon Lester’s gem (1 ER over 9 IP) out of the mix and the ERA is 6.02.

On the IPod right now: Domino by Van Morrison.

Back with much more later on.
