One more game before the break. Here are the lineups:
RED SOX (50-37)
Pitching: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (5-3, 4.71)
BLUE JAYS (44-44)
Pitching: RHP Jesse Litsch (0-3, 7.30)
Game time: 1:07 p.m.
State of the Sox: The Sox have lost five of their last six and six of their last nine games. They start the day five games out of first and three games out in the wild card.
Bad stretch: The Sox were 49-32 on July 3, a season-best 17 games over .500 and a half-game out of first. They have won one the six games since and lost 4.5 games in the standings. They have a 5.58 ERA in those six games while hitting .257.
Road woes: The Sox are now 21-20 on the road, having dropped nine of their last 12 away from Fenway Park.
No way in the day: The Sox are 8-14 in day games. If you have a theory on this, please mention it in the comments section.
Catch as catch can: Victor Martinez left the game in San Francisco on June 27 in the fourth inning. Since then, Red Sox catchers are 5 of 35 (.143) with two RBIs. Two of those hits and both RBIs belong to Jason Varitek, who has since joined VMart on the DL. Kevin Cash is 2 for 19 and Gustavo Molina 1 for 7.
Think Victor’s agents are keeping track of that? Sometimes a player’s value is never more apparent than when he’s not in the lineup.
Dice-K day: Matsuzaka is 5-1, 3.51 in eight starts against the Jays. He is 2-1, 2.77 in four starts in Toronto. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he has a 5.06 ERA in the three starts he has made since coming off the DL.
Matsuzaka was 33-15 in 61 starts and had a 3.72 ERA in his first two seasons with the Sox. He is 9-9, 5.21 in his 23 starts since.
