State of the Sox: The Sox are 6-12 since July 4 and have fallen eight games out of first place, five back in the wild card. But there are 63 games left to play, counting tonight. They are 3-4 on this road trip and 4-7 since the All-Star break.

California love: The Sox swept four games from the Angels at Fenway Park from May 3-6, outscoring them 36-16.

Hey, we know that guy: Angel Stadium will be abuzz as newly acquired Dan Haren takes the hill against the Red Sox. In what looks like a very smart trade, the Angels picked up Haren from the Diamondbacks on Sunday for lefty Joe Saunders and a selection of prospects.

But the Sox may not be too broken up about it. Haren lasted only 5.2 innings against the Sox at Fenway on June 17, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks. But he is 2-4 with a 3.14 ERA in seven career starts against Boston.

The hitter matchups against him:

Scutaro 1-3
Ortiz 6-15
Beltre 17-41
Youkilis 1-13
Hermida 0-10
Drew 1-9
Cameron 0-6
Hall 1-6

Buch’s back: Clay Buchholz will be making his second start since coming off the disabled list. The first one was shaky as he allowed five runs on six hits and three walks in four innings against Oakland on Wednesday.

He did not pitch well against the Angels on May 3 in a 17-8 victory, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. In his career, Buchholz is 2-2 with a 6.35 ERA in four starts against the Angels.

Inside the slump: The Red Sox are hitting .236 with a .299 on-base percentage and averaging 3.8 runs in their last 18 games. Their ERA (4.01) has been solid during that stretch.

Other stuff: Kevin Youkilis has hit in six straight at 12 of 31. … David Ortiz has walked 16 times in the last 17 games. … The Sox are 5-8 in their last 13 road games. … The Sox have scored five runs in their last 27 innings, hitting .222 including 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position. … Sox catchers are 12 of 74 (.162) with two RBIs since Victor Martinez came out of the lineup with broken thumb. The last RBI by a catcher was June 29.

On the iPod right now: The Last Resort by The Eagles.

Back with much more later on.
