Extra Bases

VMart, Cameron and Kalish stand tall

As L’Affaire Ellsbury drags on, now seems liked a good time to point out three positive pieces of news on the injury front:

* Victor Martinez has played every inning of every game since he was activated off the disabled list eight days ago. Victor ended up at first base last night when Kevin Youkilis jammed his thumb and handled the switch with aplomb.

Asked about how he has been playing, Victor shook off the question and said it was no big deal. His teammates think otherwise. Martinez has become an important member of the team in a short period of time and it would behoove the Sox to keep him.

* Mike Cameron learned yesterday that his injury had worsened and he would be going on the disabled list. His season could well be over. But when he got to Fenway Park around 2 p.m., he and Kevin Youkilis spent nearly an hour talking to a bunch of kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Boston in the third base stands.

I couldn’t hear what Cameron was saying from my vantage point. But those there said he had a great message for the kids.

* Ryan Kalish, in addition to being a very good prospect, is a good dude. He went over to the Cleveland clubhouse after the game to speak with Carlos Santana and wish him well with his knee injury. Not every player would do that.

Thankfully, Santana may have escaped that gruesome-looking collision without a serious injury.

As for Ellsbury, he will DH for Pawtucket today. They start at 12:05 p.m.
