State of the Sox: The Sox are 1-2 on their 10-game road trip. They start the day seven games out of first place and 4 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay in the wild card. The Rays are at Detroit tonight. The Sox are 12-12 since the All-Star break and 14-17 since July 4.

State of ‘Stripes: The Yankees are 2 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay in the division. They are 3-3 on a homestand that ends today.

State of the rivalry: It has been a New York state of mind lately. The Yankees have won four of the seven meetings this season and 16 of the last 21.

Treated like tourists: The Red Sox are 4-10 at the new Yankee Stadium and overall have lost 13 of 19 in the Bronx since July 5, 2008.

Lester tries again: Jon Lester is 0-4 with a 4.39 ERA in his last four starts. The Sox have scored three runs while he has been on the mound in those games. Over 26 2/3 innings, he has allowed 31 hits and walked eight while striking out 30.

Lester is 1-0, 4.50 in two starts against the Yankees this season and 4-1, 4.01 in 10 career starts.
