Here are the lineups:
RED SOX (75-58)
Pitching: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (8-4, 4.19)
Pitching: RHP Brad Bergesen (6-9, 5.55)
Game time: 7:05 p.m.
State of the Sox: The Sox have lost four of their last six and are 2-3 on a road trip that ends today. They are eight games out of first and seven out in the wild card with 29 left to play.
Dice-K day: Matsuzaka has not pitched since Aug. 21 because of a sore back. He had been pitching well, going 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA in his previous eight starts. The Sox won six of those games. He has a hideous 5.65 ERA in seven career starts against the Birds and is 2-2, 7.30 in five starts at Camden Yards.
All we need is a little patience: The Sox have drawn only eight walks in their last six games while striking out 51 times.
I can handle things. I’m smart. Not like everybody says. I’m smart and I want respect: Jonathan Papelbon has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances. In that stretch he has allowed one hit, walked three and struck out 11.
He does have five losses and six blown saves. But Papelbon’s WHIP is down to 1.076.
Streaking on: Victor Martinez has hit in seven straight at 13 of 30.
Milestone watch: Adrian Beltre has 997 career RBIs and 897 runs scored.
Take a walk: Bill Hall has not drawn a walk in 79 plate appearances dating back to July 28. Somewhere in Florida, Wade Boggs just killed a beer and grimaced.
Double up: The Sox lead the majors with 294 doubles.
Other stuff: Darnel McDonald has played in 98 games and had 303 plate appearances. His previous major league experience consisted of 68 games and 156 PAs. … The Sox are 38-33 in games decided by one or two runs. … Baltimore has won four of its last five.
Enjoy the game.
