Pregame news and notes from Fenway

Adrian Beltre was back in the Sox lineup batting cleanup and playing third base after nursing a sore wrist Sunday after injuring it during Saturday night’s game vs. Toronto.

David Ortiz takes a seat tonight against Orioles’ lefty Brian Matusz. Mike Lowell takes his spot at DH.

Terry Francona was encouraged about Hideki Okajima’s revival which includes 8-1/3 scoreless innings in his last 10 outings. Okajima has had a down season and it’s uncertain whether the Red Sox will bring him back. When he’s on “he’s such a difference-maker in our bullpen,” said Francona. But the ineffective Okajima caused the Red Sox to have use other other relievers and have to use Daniel Bard more than they wanted to.

Former Sox catcher Gary Allenson has remained the third base coach with the Orioles under Buck Showalter after managing Norfolk, the O’s Triple-A team for the first half of the season. Allenson came up when Dave Trembley was fired and stayed as third base coach when Juan Samuel managed the team on an interim basis.

Ryan Kalish is one young Sox player who will not play winter ball. Francona said Kalish has played enough baseball this season. The young outfielder will get himself ready for spring training and a possible shot at a starting outfield spot with the Sox.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia was working on his throws to second base with catching instructor Gary Tuck before the game.
