State of the Sox: In the words of a certain football coach in a hooded sweatshirt, it is what it is. The Sox have lost three of their last four games and start the day eight games out of first place and 6.5 games behind in the wild card with 12 games left to play.

Home cooked: The Red Sox have lost 8 of their last 11 games at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have an .803 OPS at home and .777 on the road. Last year the split was .862/.753. The Sox also have more home runs on the road this season, 105-92.

Woes against the O’s: The Red Sox are 8-8 against Baltimore. The Orioles are 52-82 (.388) against everybody else.

My way or the highway: The Orioles are 28-17 under Buck Showalter, winning 11 if their last 15.

Nick clicks: Baltimore RF Nick Markakis has 43 doubles. He has had at least 43 doubles for four straight seasons. The only other players in history to have done that are Hall of Famers Joe Medwick (1935-39) and Tris Speaker (1920-23).

I would have thought for sure Pete Rose, Ty Cobb or Stan Musial would have done that. But they did not.

Clay’s day: Buchholz is 5-2, 3.38 against the Orioles in eight career appearances against them.

Martinez mania: Victor Martinez is 23 of 75 (.307) this month with 11 extra-base hits and 19 RBIs. Victor has hit safely in 12 straight home games at 18 of 48 (.375) with 15 RBIs.

That’s it from me today. Enjoy the game.
