The Red Sox have until midnight tomorrow to decide on their $12.5 million option on David Ortiz. There is nothing new to report on the situation.
It’s worth noting, however, that Texas declined its $9 million option on Vlad Guerrero. He and Ortiz had comparable seasons and are comparable players in terms of their age and inability to play the field.
Ortiz may want a multi-year deal. But the Red Sox would be doing him a favor if they pick up the option. Designated hitters simply aren’t worth what they once were.
