Gardenhire named AL manager of the year; Francona finishes fourth

ORLANDO — Ron Gardenhire of the Twins was named the American League manager of the year by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Ron Washington was second, Joe Maddon third and Terry Francona fourth followed by Cito Gaston and Joe Girardi. Gardenhire won for the first time, which is surprising given all the good work he has done over the years.

Gardenhire received 16 of a possible 28 first-place votes and was on every ballot.

Bud Black of the Padres won the NL manager of the year award. He edged Dusty Baker of the Reds by one point. Bruce Bochy was third followed by Bobby Cox, Charlie Manuel and Brad Mills.
