David Ortiz is hosting his annual charity golf tournament in the Dominican Republic starting on Thursday.
Those scheduled to attend include Dustin Pedroia, Daniel Bard, Darnell McDonald, Jon Lester, Jed Lowrie, Tim Wakefield, Johnny Damon and Pedro Martinez.
It’s also worth noting that Adrian Beltre is expected to be there as well. Obviously his decision will come down to money, but the Red Sox will get a chance to recruit him a bit before the Winter Meetings start a week from today.
Beltre clearly warmed up to the Red Sox over the course of the season. That he is going to David’s event is another sign of that.
Robinson Cano, Vlad Guerrero, Placido Polanco, Ubaldo Jimenez and Francisco Liriano also are on the list along with Bill Russell, Jim Rice and Luis Tiant. That’s an impressive group.
In conjunction with the tournament in the Dominican Republic next month, Big Papi is auctioning off some terrific items and experiences for his charity.
Check it out on his web site.
There are fielding lessons from Pedroia, a chance to take batting practice with David and tickets to assorted Red Sox events. There are vacations, sporting events in other cities, a chance to hang out with Bobby Orr or to meet Rice.
You can even throw out the first pitch at Fenway for a game next season.
So if you’re looking for a unique gift or have some extra money to spend, it will aid a good cause as David helps needy children who require life-saving heart surgery in his homeland.
