Notes on ‘Tek, Scutaro, Downs and Pedro

A few notes for you:

• Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported that the Dodgers are investigating virtually every free agent catcher on the market, including Jason Varitek. The Dodgers are trying to sign Russell Martin before the non-tender deadline on Thursday.

Varitek would certainly be a good clubhouse presence for new manager Don Mattingly. Imagine the former captain of the Red Sox playing for the former captain of the Yankees.

• The Giants need a shortstop now that Juan Uribe has signed with the Dodgers. The answer could be trading for Tampa Bay’s Jason Bartlett. But the Sox may try and see what they can get for Marco Scutaro.

• There are reports that Scott Downs will decline arbitration from the Blue Jays. The lefty reliever will not lack for offers.

• Pedro Martinez’s charitable foundation has made a donation of $50,000 to Academia Hay Poder en Aprender, which will support extracurricular programs for underserved youth in Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic, the hometown of three-time Cy Young Award winner.

The donation was matched by the United States Agency for International Development through the Major League Baseball Dominican Development Alliance.

The combined contribution of $100,000 will help provide the materials for extracurricular programs that focus on education, arts and crafts, music, and computers for more than 300 kids.

Pedro and his wife, Carolina Cruz de Martinez, made the announcement today with Jorge Pérez-Díaz, who was recently appointed Major League Baseball’s interim head of Latin American Oversight.

Pedro’s foundation has contributed over $300,000 to the program.

“I am really happy that so far we have received the support from MLB and USAID,” said Martinez. “We hope more people and organizations will be encouraged to be part of these visions that are changing the lives of our youth.”
