Rumor of the day: Trading for Beltran

Peter Gammons was on MLB Network and said the Red Sox are talking to the Mets about outfielder Carlos Beltran.

Here is what we know about Beltran: He hates the Mets and they hate him. It’s a relationship that went sour long ago and he has one year and $18 million left on his contract.

Beltran will be 34 in April and his last good season was in 2008. But if the Mets picked up a big chunk of the money and didn’t want much back, the Sox could do worse for a left fielder. Beltran has a career line of .294/.366/.523 against lefties and would benefit from he change of scenery.

Beltran has virtually no experience on the corners. But at this point, he’s not in a position to dictate where he plays. The Sox could do bad contract for bad contract and give the Mets Daisuke Matsuzaka, assuming he would waive his no-trade. But then the Sox would need a starter.

Magglio Ordonez would make more sense. But Beltran is worth discussing.
